THE RACING RULES OF SAILING FOR 2009 - 2012 - AMENDMENTS
The Racing Rules of Sailing for 2009-2012 - Amendments Effective 1 January 2010

The International Sailing Federation announced today that, as a result of actions taken by the ISAF Racing Rules Committee and the ISAF Council during the ISAF Annual Conference, several changes in The Racing Rules of Sailing for 2009-2012 will take effect on 1 January 2010.

Rule 18.2(c) will be changed to prohibit a newly discovered and potentially dangerous tactic that was an unintended consequence of the current wording of this rule. The revised rule will no longer permit a boat to tack just before she reaches a mark and, as a result of her tack, become entitled to mark-room from boats that had been clear ahead of her when they reached the zone.

The definition Obstruction will be changed so that a boat racing will no longer be an obstruction to other boats that are required to give her room or mark-room. This change will simplify the analysis of some situations near a mark in which both rules 18 and 19 apply, and it will not otherwise change the 'game'.

Additions will be made to the definition "Party" to correct unintended omissions. The revised definition will mean that, whenever redress is requested for a boat by the race committee or considered for a boat by the protest committee, that boat will be a party to the resulting hearing. Also, a race committee that requests redress for a boat will also become a party when its request is heard.

Click here to show the changes made in detail.

ISA YACHTSMAN EUROMARINE RIB CHALLENGE FINAL 2009

EVENT REPORT: Yachtsman euromarine RIB Challenge 2009

After a very close Grand Final, Foynes Yacht Club was the ultimate winners of the ISA Yachtsman euromarine RIB Challenge 2009.  The Grand Final was generously hosted by the defending champions, Wexford Harbour Boat & Tennis Club, on Saturday 7th November 2009.

Yachtsman euromarine donated the RIB, valued at €22,500, as the grand prize for the 2009 ISA Yachtsman euromarine RIB Challenge. This competition is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of powerboat crews, whilst providing a chance to represent their club or training centre in a competitive environment.

Ten teams from throughout Ireland qualified for the Grand Final but on the day just eight competed.

Achill Powerboat Club (Mayo)
Bow Waves Training Centre (Galway)
Buccaneer Powerboat Club (Dublin) – did not compete on the day
Courtown Sailing Club A (Wexford)
Courtown Sailing Club B (Wexford)
Foynes Yacht Club (Limerick)
Lough Derg Jet Ski Club (Tipperary)
Wexford Harbour Boat & Tennis Club A (Wexford)
Wexford Harbour Boat & Tennis Club B (Wexford)
Wicklow Sailing Club (Wicklow) – did not compete on the day

The RIB Challenge consisted of a mixture of on the water and on shore tasks, aimed at both the team and the individual team members. For the Grand Final there were two on the water tasks: a RIB handling challenge and a towing challenge using a tillar engined  craft.

The four off the water challenges included a line throwing competition, a life ring throwing competition, trailor reversing and concluded with a nautical knowledge theory test.

Fri. 23rd Oct

It has been far too long since I have updated this page (anybody fancy the role of Webmaster), but havent we been busy.

Congratulations to the following;

Stuart McCormick and Susie White for winning the 2009 Wednesday series and the Club Championship,
James Hackett for winning the 2009 Sunday series,

to Craig and Joan Pepper on their new arrival, Killian Pepper who weighed in at 7lbs. on Tue 15/9/09,
another new arrival was GP 13228 (probably under weight) to Gosia Oleskow and Garry rock (baptised in Donaghadee at the Hot Toddy, but more of that later).

GP14 Autumn Open & Youths Championship

Congratulations to Alan Pinder and Kevin Hackett for the Bronze Fleet win and to Darren Smyth for winning the
16 to 18's section of the Youths Championships.

Thanks to everybody who gave of their time;

Garry Rock, Gosia Oleskow, James Hackett, Mel O'Hara, Ben Elliott, Katy Johnston, Hilda Shaw, Ben Hogan, Martin Leese, Martin Hynes, Sean Dufffy, Colm Hackett and Garry Walsh for manning the rescue boats,
Gerry Adams who organised the Sub Aqua boat and a crew, without even being asked,

John Smith, Anna Brodrick and Jennifer Hunt who assisted on the Committee boat,
Louise Milner, Sabine Potterton, Elinor McArdle, Fiona, Jennifer and Lara Hunt who organised catering and the Saturday evening meal,
Brenda and Niamh Loughman for registration and scoring,
Roisin Gaynor who provided the Committee boat and Keith Pinder our beach master.

GP14 Hot Toddy

This years Hot Toddy was hosted by Donaghadee on the N.E. corner of the Ards Peninsula.
The club completed the construction of an excellent new club house last May and they were in the mood to show it off. With generous sponsorship from Ards Tourism, a challenging sailing area and the weather, it was a memorable weekend.

The following are extracts from the Hot Toddy reports which give a flavour of the event.

from the Gold Fleet Report by Richard Streett
THANK YOU DONAGHADEE! What an event. From a super light, shifty, elusive puffs and tide session, day one, to a wet and as wild as it gets ride at the end. Beautifully run, well organised and great craic.

from the Silver Fleet report by Simon Cully
With the wind up a gear (or three) the last race was a survival kind of race that kept most spinnakers in their bags and red knuckles on the tiller. Race 5 never happened...phew
A good end to a great season and fitting that it should be in a fabulous new location that saw a welcome return of the sandwich! Thank you Donaghadee.

Bronze Fleet by Stuart McCormick
In the Bronze Fleet Michael Collender and Brian Walker made great progress  in the light winds on Saturday claiming 13th place overall after two races and six points clear of nearest rivals Stuart McCormick and Susie Whyte. Third place was closely guarded by Gareth Rock and Gosia Oleskow also from Mullingar Sailing Club.
With the battle for bronze fleet league already won, the challenge for club kudos remained.
Sunday's winds made no change to the top three positions as Michael and Brian had done enough to hold a two point lead at the finish. Third position was taken by another Mullingar boat with a gutsy performance by new comers Gareth and Gosia in Humble Pie.
So thanks again to all who made it happen at Donaghadee and three cheers to GOACHER. With new genoa for next season, silver fleet..... watchout.

                more photos

I must say, I was pleased with a Bronze 1, 2, 3 for the Club, this result was not easily won, the quality of the competitors who did not finish on the Sunday was impressive. I know that the only reason we survived was the experience we had gained from wet and wild races on the lake. The wind speed was not particularly high, possibly low five at most, but the wind over tide effect generated a wave pattern perfectly designed to capsize a GP14.

Garry and Gosia took eight attempts to right their boat after their initial capsize and were eventually towed to shore. At one stage most marks were littered with capsized boats, floating bananas and hats.

Added note to the tuning guide page, which hopefully clarifies the type of mast referred to in the GP14 tuning guides.
The Speedsails guide refers to slim and fat top masts. Superspars discontinued the fat top mast in 2001 and recent Speedsails boats should have the slim top mast.

from the International Sailing Federation website.

While the Racing Rules of Sailing are well written, an illustrated guide to the rules such as "The Rules in Practice 2009 - 2012" is a worthwhile investment.

Race Officer Training
The ISA Racing Department are setting up the 2009 race officials training programme.
Clubs are invited to host an ISA Race Officer Level One and Level Two training courses.

Level One
This is the popular starter course and is suited to those with a little or no previous race management training with perhaps some experience at either helping out with the local race team or even running small races for their club.
The course covers the basics of race management.
Time required is one day, morning and afternoon or two evenings.
The cost is €20 per participant plus any refreshments.

Level Two
Previous attendance at a Level One course is a requirement for participation in the higher level course.
This is suited to existing Local and Regional race officers wishing to extend their skills and learn how to take charge of larger regattas.
Part of this course is the ISA Race Management Rules Test.
The test covers Racing Rules and race management knowledge.
Time required is one day, morning and afternoon.
The cost is €20 per participant plus any refreshments.
