Fri 6th June The GP14 coaching day has been re-scheduled for Saturday June 14th, be at the Club at 10am. Added links to the Racing page and uploaded results for the Summer Sunday, Wednesday and Friday series. Summer Sundays Series Starting June 1st and ending on August 24th, with 26 potential races and 8 discards.
Summer Wednesdays Series Starting June 4th and ending on August 20th, with 10 potential races and 3 discards.
Summer Fridays Series Starting June 6th and ending on August 22nd,with 10 potential races and 3 discards, the discard profile will be similar to the Wednesday series. After reviewing the results of the May series I have modified the scoring rules. A race disqualification will not modify the points earned for O.D. duty and class competition bonus. The points for OD and COM will be the average for all non discarded races. 1. At the end of a series the winner is the helm with the highest points score. 2. For any particular finishing position in a race, a boat is allocated a greater score if it beats more boats. (see table) 3. The score for a Retirement is equivalent to finishing in “last +1” place. 4. If you come to the start area and by your actions indicate, that you intend to start the race, you will be scored “last +1” place. 5. The score for a Disqualification or “Did-Not-Start” is Zero points. 6. Officer of the Day duty is scored at the average for non discarded series scores. 7. Participation in Class events is rewarded, and missed club races will be scored at the average for non discarded series scores. 8. To qualify a "Race" must be started by the O.D. or in the case of a Gate Start by at least two boats. Fri.16th May Fireball Leinsters Report – Mullingar Sailing Club 10/11th May Thanks to all who gave up their free time to help out with Fireball regatta . All participants were very appreciative of hospitallity and club faciliaties. Paddy Mulholland Wed, 14/05/08 Tue. 13th May 2008 Junior Sailing Course As of May 12th , the course is fully subscribed. High points race scoring system If you have taken a look at the May Series results you might have noticed that I have decided to trial a high points scoring system in preference to the low points system used at regattas. This systen has some advantages, series ties are unlikely and it rewards participation. It was developed by Chipstead Sailing Club in Kent and the background to the scheme can be found at.... link The key features of the scoring system are: 1. At the end of a series the winner is the helm with the highest points score.2. 6. Officer of the Day duty is scored at the average for all of his or her series scores. 7. Participation in Class events is rewarded, and missed club races will be scored at the average for all of his or her series scores. Re-organised the Racing page and added "How to set a course", "5 Minute starting sequence and flags" and a "Rescue Boat check list" sub page. Fri. 17th April Fleet Captain’s Bulletin , April 2008 Sailing season: The season will start on Sunday 20th April, with Wednesday evening racing starting on May 7th and Friday racing on June 6th. Sundays (2 races, first gun at 3.00 p.m.), Wednesday (one race, first gun at 7.00 p.m. in May, 7.30pm thereafter ), Friday evenings (one race, first gun at 7.30 p.m.) Competition: We will start the racing season with a series for the month of May – 8 days sailing with 10 potential races with 4 discards, handicapping will apply. There will be two further series, in June / July and August / September. Racing will continue into October as the weather dictates. I have been requested to implement a Portsmouth Yardstick handicap system to facilitate racing between boats of different classes. In a mixed fleet the O.D. would have to record the elapsed time for each boat finishing the race in order to calculate the corrected race result. There are practical and Club policy implications involved with adopting the scheme, if you have an opinion, be it positive or negative, let me know. Rescue Boat Rota: The rota is organized to optimize the number of boats available to sail in Club races and GP14 Irelands regattas. Crews and helms who normally sail together will man the rescue boat, if you are sailing with a new partner or you are not available for an extended period, I will change the next schedule to suit. If you are not available for your rescue boat scheduled day, it is your responsibility to arrange a swap with another member. I will send a text message to each rescue boat crew, one week before your scheduled duty, as a reminder. Please check your mobile phone number on the Rota. If there is an error or omission, send a text message with your name to (086) 85 77 367. You can download an encrypted PDF copy of the Rota .....here Training / Coaching: Niall Henry and Ossian Geraghty have agreed to running a coaching session at the Club on Saturday 31st May , starting at 11am. The focus of the session will be spinnaker handling. Sailing Regattas: The Club will be hosting the Fireball Leinster Championship on May 10th - 11th and GP14 Autumn Open on September 20th – 21st. Your support in running and competing in these events would be appreciated. Paddy Mulholland is the Fireball event manager and he can be contacted at (086) 823 5890. Insurance: Boat owners are reminded that all boats (GP14s, Mirrors, Cats, Fireballs, Lasers etc.) must be insured with a minimum third party liability €3 million. Boat owners will be required to sign a declaration in this respect. Mullingar Sailing Club accepts no responsibility for damage or loss. In addition, the Club accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to boats & equipment. Have a good season, Brian Walker Sat. 5th April The 2008 Junior Sailing Course application form is available here . Thurs. 3rd April Given that Sterling is at a historical low of £1 = €1.268, it's worth considering the purchase of a Dry Suit from the U.K. The Wet Suit Outlet in Essex are selling the Typhoon Racer Back Zip + Fleece for Eur 240 and the Gul Infra Fully Breathable 2008 Drysuit + Fleece for Eur 273. Wet suits are fine for the Summer months, but in April or October there is a lot to be said for staying dry and warm (the lake water temperature last Sunday was 7.5C). First of all, I would like to wish everybody a happy, prosperous and competitive new year. I droped the Club last weekend, to see the results of the ground improvement works. The Tarmac looks fantastic and due to the filling and levelling that was carried out, we now have significantly more useable space for parking boats. |
